Educating Refugee & Immigrant Students: Course description
DESCRIPTION: This course will explore refugee and immigrant students’ assets and experiences, preparing educators for success in serving all students. We will discuss refugee backgrounds and the immigration process, intercultural communication in the classroom, 외상, tips for using language acquisition and content area literacy techniques, and refugee family engagement. A field project will complement readings and discussions to give teachers an opportunity to examine refugee issues through the lens of asset discourse in their own classrooms. All projects and readings are designed to support classroom teachers and other professional educators in their mission to help engage and grow all students. Special attention will be paid to build supports for refugee and immigrant students to work against the limiting factors to become fully engaged in their life and work in the US.
PURPOSE: Using a variety of media, this course is designed to provide you with the necessary background knowledge and hands-on skills to help you and your newcomer students succeed in the classroom. Topics covered include refugee students’ background information, the resettlement process, intercultural success, pre-immigration and post-immigration trauma, ELL techniques for every classroom, and refugee family engagement. We will help you develop refugee-inclusive pedagogies in your classroom, while engaging all your students to develop identity, agency, and social connections.
OUTCOMES: This course consists of six units designed to provide you with the necessary skills and background knowledge to help you and your newcomer students succeed. As a result of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the resettlement process and available resources
- Empathize with your refugee student’s perspective and experience and incorporate his or her assets
- Assess your own cultural awareness and develop intercultural competence and communication skills
- Use evidence-based techniques for content instruction, utilize multilingualism, and develop your own teaching and classroom strategies
- Understand your refugee student’s unique needs and develop methods for dealing with trauma
- Engage with your refugee students’ families and work with interpreters
